Laboratory role
Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol that is moderately soluble in water. At concentrations around 0.9% it is bacteriostatic: it inhibits the growth of bacteria introduced into the vial, rather than sterilizing the contents. That is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water, which contains no preservative and is meant for single entry. For a laboratory, the practical point is that a preserved diluent tolerates repeated entries better than an unpreserved one.
Typical laboratory uses include:
- Reconstituting lyophilized peptides and other research materials for in-vitro and analytical work.
- Preparing working dilutions of reconstituted stocks.
Benzyl alcohol is not inert toward every molecule. It can interact with some proteins and is known to induce aggregation of some proteins, so researchers should confirm that a preserved diluent is compatible with their material and assay. Where a preservative could interfere, sterile water or a buffer is the usual alternative.
Sterility & handling
Vials are sealed and should be inspected before use; do not use a vial if the seal is broken or the solution is cloudy. Disinfect the stopper before each entry and use aseptic technique. The preservative slows microbial growth but does not replace good sterile practice.
